What will you actually pay in tax this year?

A free South African income tax calculator, built from the same tax engine this practice uses to prepare and sign off real client reports — so the rates here cannot differ from the rates on an assessment we hand you.

It works out your income tax for the 2023 to 2027 tax years from what you already have in front of you: pay from your employer, retirement fund contributions including the portion your employer pays in, local interest, medical scheme contributions and out-of-pocket medical expenses, your age, a confirmed disability, section 18A donations to a registered charity, other taxable income such as net rental or freelance profit, and the PAYE or provisional tax already paid over.

Every money figure can be entered per month or per year. Fill in whichever one you know and the other fills itself in — because most people carry their salary and their medical aid in their head as a monthly amount, and a monthly figure typed into an annual box is the easiest way there is to get a tax estimate badly wrong.

You get the whole calculation line by line, not just a total: gross income, every exemption and deduction, the rebates and medical tax credits, the tax payable, and the refund or shortfall against what has already been paid. The SARS rate tables for the year you chose are printed in full alongside it.

It is an estimate, not a tax return. It does not cover travel allowances, company cars or logbook claims, capital gains, rental or business income with a full expense schedule, commission expenses, foreign income, or retirement lump sums — those are the parts that need a person. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
